Holidaze

This blog is a month late, but the cards are still up.
The holidays are always a busy time for anybody, especially our family with three birthdays and an anniversary in December/January.  We're getting better at handling it though and the kids are getting older and more used to the Thanksgiving through mid-January rush.

This year Thanksgiving was the easiest one on record, and even with the time crunch of having morning plans we were able to get the turkey cooked and all the food on the table.  Well, except for the cranberry sauce, which we ALWAYS forget in the last minute push to get dinner plated.  I think we still have one of the five cans we bought for the event.  It was our 7th time hosting in the past 8 years and since we now have the 36 hours prior to dinner meticulously scheduled, it was our most relaxing.

Sure, Mommy, I'll help you saute the squash for the soup!

Mmmm - Cannoli may have found some drippings

Now Gobbles gets to blend the soup!

Tastes great!
On Thanksgiving morning, hubs was ready to participate for the first time in the annual neighborhood football game.  Sounds fun, but this is no ragtag operation to be taken lightly.  The hosts had out a bloody mary bar and we all brought some kind of breakfast food (or beer) and lawn chairs to watch the men play in their backyard, while the under 12 crowd played another game behind us.  It was the coldest Thanksgiving of record, and of course the Lobster Roll was not feeling it.  Gobbles was fascinated with the playhouse the kids had, so he chose not to play football with the other kids.  After about 20 minutes of trying to socialize while the Lobster alternated between put me down, I go play with Gobbles and I cold! Pick me up! go inside!, I decided to take her home.  Gobbles stayed behind to play with friends and watch hubs, who apparently didn't realize his son was still there until Gobbles decided he wanted to leave - before the game was over but when I was already home. Thankfully, his neighbor buddy's mom was on her way home too and dropped him off.  Love this neighborhood!
No joke football game

Hubs came home from the football game with what he thought was a broken finger, but never got it treated because he didn't feel like being in the ER on Thanksgiving, because, you know, it's just a finger.  Our families showed up and the kids felt all important having their own kiddie table for the first time.  We stuffed ourselves until we couldn't eat anymore and enjoyed each other's company.
Let's eat!

The next day, hubs had more neighborhood gang time fun when he and eight other dads took the kids to the mall (yes on black Friday) for Santa pictures, lunch, and a matinee.  I was looking forward to it because I had my own black Friday mission.  A few weeks before Gobbles picked out a superhero coloring set for a friend's birthday.  That morning, as we asked him what he was asking Santa for, he told us that he indeed wanted a superhero coloring set for himself.  Exclusively at Kohls.  Not knowing if they would sell our or what, I braved the crowds while hubs had the kids.  After I got what I needed I swung by where they were eating lunch to retrieve the Lobster Roll for her nap, as she wouldn't make it through the movie.  He told me that it was an easy morning, despite our daughter taking one look at Santa and bolting.  I later found out that of course it was easy for him - the neighborhood girls basically babysat our kids the whole time!  Gobbles did not stop talking about his Santa encounter and hanging out with his friends and all the fun he had, so it turned out to be a great day for them.
We're so excited to go see SANTA!

Wahh hooo santa!

The Lobster ran away screaming!
Well thank goodness for photoshop!

The days in December which we were not celebrating something else were all dedicated to Christmas.  Tree hunting and decorating, happily smiling for the Christmas Card, nonstop cookie making, and brunch with Santa.  At school, Gobbles had a winter show (nondenominational of course), and since you were transitioning classrooms, he actually practiced with two classes.  He waited until the very last minute to decide who to sing with, and chose the familiarity of Preschool 1, with a bit of our prodding.  We figured it was a nice send off before he started full time with Pre-K in January.
Yes - I LOVE trees!

We even climb Daddy like a tree!

Which one?
This one!!

Now a post-tree hunt break

Ready to see Gobbles perform his winter show!

The precision in which that jingle bell is dancing is amazing!

Sing your heart out, Gobbles!

Meanwhile, the lobster has her eyes on your pal's little bro!

The weekend before Christmas started off with a playdate at Mooshie's house, with over half my girls' kids there.  It was so much fun to watch them interact and enjoy the girls' company after all these years.  It's comforting that even though we don't see each other as much, we can still fall back into it like old pals.
More playtime - ready to go!

Chaos!

The girls' kids minus 4.

Couger

Every year the days immediately surrounding Christmas are mass chaos with families, travelling, and presents - the kids are so lucky to have so many family members that love and care for them.  First up we had Christmas with my family, where the kids were of course spoiled with a ton of stuff from their wishlist and more.  We spent all day at my mom's opening presents, eating, playing, and just enjoying the comfort and coziness of the holidays.
After all this Christmas celebrating we almost forgot about presents!

Yes!  Shoes for my collection!

Gee thanks grandmom, a hat.

Just like the dinosaur I got for my friend!

Of course we smile at pictures of us!

Trying on my new stuff

Wrapping that man around my finger

After a quick school Monday, we loaded up the puppies and the kids to head to Hazleton to stay with our in-laws overnight to Christmas Eve.  The visit was another whirlwind of visiting and presents, so many presents.  I love watching the Lobster Roll and her cousin Poozers grow up together and interact like best friends when they see each other.  Gobbles doesn't seem to mind the attention the girls get, because he gets plenty of his own as well.  This year, with another snowstorm coming through, we packed up early and were on the road before dark.  When the sun went down, Gobbles loved trying to search the night sky for Santa's sleigh, pointing out all the lights that were possibilities.  For weeks after Christmas, the Lobster would tell us, Santa Claus lives in the North Pole, far far away!
We've said it once and we'll say it again - double. trouble.

Even the Lobster and Poozers have their moments

Pure sweetness!

Now on with the snack!

Gobbles stuck in the middle!

Standing on my tiptoes to get close!
The next morning, the kids actually slept in a bit before realizing that Santa had come.  When they realized there were more presents; however, they made up for lost time.  Gobbles tore through the presents so quickly, tossing over his shoulder clothes and anything else he didn't find interesting.  The Lobster was more fascinated by her pink bicycle, which was just like the spiderman bike Gobbles got, only smaller.  She kept sitting on it with excitement, while Gobbles finished up with his presents and moved on to hers.  We ended the morning at church where the Lobster Roll spent her time back and forth in the potty and Gobbles enjoyed listening to the singing.  Their favorite part was the recessional hymn, Hark the Herald Angels Sing, which they refer to as "The Charlie Brown Song" since they heard it first on Charlie Brown Christmas.  Later on we celebrated with my family, aunts, uncles, cousins, and their kids at a big party at my uncle's house.  Even though we don't see them often, it's always so much fun to get together with them.

Santa Came!
How'd he make it through the chimney with all this crap here?

The $ store chalkboards from our stockings were our 3rd favorite gifts!

Learning to read... or at least to push buttons

Happy and ready for our annual church visit

Ready to ride!

Hey M - we match!

This guy looks friendly!

Wow they have a pool too?

Our other bikes - testing them in the kitchen!

Post Christmas with our "cousins"

Getting the hang of it!
The Lobster is not one to be outdone!

A week later we celebrated new years to close out the holidays.  We were invited to a party at our neighbor's house where she had about 30 adults and 45 kids running around.  It was a lot of fun and I'm sure will be even better once the kids get older.  The Lobster, being the youngest one there, kept alternating with wanting to play in the basement and wanting to hang out with me and hubs.  She did pretty well going up and down the stairs and hanging with other kids (where Gobbles was the whole night), but I would get nervous during some of the stair trips.  After all, it was way past her bedtime to begin with.  I think she also liked being the center of attention in the room full of adults before running to the basement steps again.  One of the neighbors reminded me to relax, she's ok, but I think he didn't realize that she wasn't even two yet, considering she was speaking in complete sentences to him.  Both of the kids made it to midnight and celebrated with confetti and karaoke before we called it a night.  It was the perfect end to a fantastic holiday season.
Where the party at??

Looks like it's under the table!

Happy New Year!

yup.  That was a party.
Starting off the new year right!

2013 Video Review - Part 2- Fall and Winter

Part 2 of my look back on 2013.

This fall brought on a new milestone for Mr. Gobbles - his first foray into organized team sports.  I use the term organized lightly because with a bunch of three year olds it's kind of mass chaos, but he loved it.  Obviously I've written a whole post on this already, but here he is in action - number 16 on yellow.

This one from September is really long but I crack up every time I look at it.  The basic gist is that the kids were playing with balloons, the Lobster's popped, so I blew up a new one for her.  Gobbles wanted a new one too because hers was shinier, so when asking for a new one didn't work he started to ask how she popped it so he could pop his and we'd be forced to give him a new one.  I love this video because it not only shows his crazy logic skills but it also is just the epitome of our Sunday afternoons - hanging out on the sun porch as a family.

The Lobster started counting in October and Gobbles began exploring his musical side.  I got to watch hubs and the Lobster practice their dance for her wedding many many years into the future.

As the weather cooled in November we resorted to using the entertainment at a nearby mall for fun.  This was one of those rare occasions where the kids were both in great moods and were just not shy at all.

December brought about holiday cheer and lots and lots of song.  The kids helped me decorate by using their imaginations with the garland as safety nets and the ottoman as a pirate ship.  Gobbles manipulated his way into stealing the Lobster's turn in putting the star on the tree (she didn't seem to notice or care), the Lobster dazzled us with her singing, first of terrible 90s movie tunes then of a classic Christmas carol. Gobbles had his winter show singing that same carol and looked out for his sister by getting her a bell too.  Finally, the kids had fun with their cousin on Christmas Eve and all the mass chaos that goes with it.

Overall, 2013 was a good year for our family.  Watching my infant Lobster grow into a rambunctious toddler, watching Gobbles develop into an amazing big boy, and just spending time together was what it was all about.

2013 Video Review - Part 1 - Spring and Summer

For the most part, 2013 was a good year for the Gobbles household.  It was the first time since 2008 when there were no major life changers such as new jobs, new homes, or new kids.  We got to relax and do fun things as a family.  Obviously I've already gone into detail on most of these moments, but the last I uploaded was from April.  In remembering 2013 and how much the kids have grown throughout the year, I thought it'd be fun to gather some of those little moments in one spot.  So, here it is: 2013 Year in Review, the videos:

Lucky for me, Janurary through March are already posted.  The Gobbles went sledding, the Lobster Roll turned one, started walking, used frosty mugs, and ate some Cheerios.

By April, the Little Lobster Roll was 14 months old and started learning her manners.  Then Gobbles explored his artistic side.  And a love for vacuums that I didn't know he had.

In May, we took advantage of my Fridays off and made it outside whenever the rain stopped.  The Lobster was bossing her dogs around and chasing her silly brother around.  Afterwards, she attempted to help Gobbles with his chores but that didn't work out to well.  It's amazing how much she's grown up in the 8 months since this video, as she's now feeding the pups regularly with only an occasional spill.

Surprisingly, I did not take many videos in Disney World, but this one I got of the kids on It's a Small World basically sums up the trip.  Gobbles was in awe of everything and the Lobster enthusiastically pointed out everything she recognized, which on this ride seemed to be limited to ball.  I'm so glad I recapped our vacation on this blog, because even with the five thousand pictures we took I'm already forgetting the little things!

In June, the Lobster demonstrated to us just how much she likes adult man food, and Gobbles demonstrated his love for toys that I always wanted as a kid but never had.

In July, the Lobster showed us how opinionated she is by emphatically stating her preferred name (along with some expected silliness).  She also expanded her chores services and reiterated the need for us to be worried about having a teenage girl, especially when she hears Beyoncé or whatever pop diva is dominating the airwaves at the time.

August brought about all kinds of beach fun and the end to a packed summer.  The Lobster showed no fear of the water and Gobbles played ultimate Frisbee.

Four!

Dear Gobbles,

Wow.  You are FOUR years old.  My big boy you are all grown up.  I say it every year but I cannot believe how quickly you are growing.  You are your own person with your own ideas and opinions.  You are kind, caring, affectionate, empathetic, imaginative, witty, stubborn, sensitive, and so incredibly intelligent.  You are a leader among your school friends, but also know when to step back and just observe.  You are the best big brother your sister could ask for.  I hope you know how proud I am of you and that I love you all the time.

Your weekend morning routine consists of waking up, going potty, getting dressed, then coming into my and Daddy's room and greeting your puppies one by one.  If we haven't already been up with your sister, we awaken to your sweet little voice talking to your puppies, whom you have not seen in at least 8-10 hours.  Oh Spoonsie bear, my LOVE.  I missed you SO MUCH.  You are such a good girl, you look like you could use some LOVE! I love you so much, AWWWWW!  Oh Cannoli, gimmie shakes!  Give me a kiss!  Oh you're licking me but you're a good boy! Hahahaha.  After at least 5-10 minutes of loving on the dogs, you finally climb into our bed to give your parents hugs and kisses before requesting Jake and the Neverland Pirates on demand while we still laze about.  If we fall back asleep, no problem, as you know how to put on a new show, and if it's on DVR, you know how to fast forward the commercials.

Speaking of TV, your other latest interests are the "old style mickey" shows which are 3-7 minute animated segments.  You crack up at all the silliness that the characters encounter and recall them at random times like in the car or the dinner table, repeating the whole plot premise.  You wind your sister up and the two of you laugh uncontrollably at your Donald Duck imitations or Goofy recollections.  I love your little sense of humor.

Even when your humor is of the ball-busting, sarcastic kind it's cute, at least for now.  The other night I was getting dinner plated when I heard you say to your sister at the table, Hey!  Am I shaped like a napkin?  Do I look like a napkin to you?  I asked what was going on and you informed me she tried to wipe her hand on your shirt.  Mom, what does she think I'm a napkin, trying to wipe her dirty hands on me?  Wow, sounds just like something Daddy or I would say to you.  I'm not sure how I feel about your dry sarcasm just yet but I'm glad you could make light of it instead of just whining that your sister was wiping something on you!

Of course, besides the sarcasm you have your never ending advice to help keep others out of trouble.  One morning on the way to school you told me Mommy it's foggy out put your headlights on. Because if the police don't see your car they'll give you a special ticket.  Thanks buddy.  Some of your advice is just downright strange- When you slide down the branches of the tree your penis will hurt and itch and itch and itch. That's why you never climb trees.  You told me that so matter-of-factly that I didn't even bother to ask where it came from!

Your imagination has been running wild over the past couple of months, and while it's great to see you make up games and turn the living room furniture into a pirate ship, it pains me to see your fears shining through.  You've spent more nights than we can count refusing to go to bed or crawling into our bed late at night because of scary dreams and thoughts that people are going to come in your windows at night.  Gobbles, you have to know that Daddy and I would never EVER let anything happen to you or anybody "get" you.

You said when you turned 4 you'd be ok with sleeping in your own bed every night, instead of making a "pattern" (one night in our bed, two in yours, our agreeable way of getting some sleep).  However, last night your fears took over again, and after you army-crawled down the steps, around through the dining room, and through the kitchen into the family room (cracking Daddy and I up in the process), we gave in and let you sleep over again.  Most of your stubborn trials I'm able to resist, but having my own fear of the dark and studying your own genuine tears at the thought of going to sleep alone, I can only imagine what things you are creating in your head.  This all started with a Mickey Mouse Clubhouse episode where the nemesis Mortimor was trying to shrink everyone.  Your logical conclusion was that since Mickey used his words to reason with Mortimor it means he couldn't physically beat him, so he could still get you, unlike with Batman or Transformers when they defeat the enemy using brute force.  I guess I can get that.  Besides, I secretly don't mind snuggling with you while you sleep since most of your waking hugs and kisses are reserved for the dogs.

When you're not being fearful or stubborn or disobeying bedtime you are such a helpful big brother.  Now that it's dark, every night when we get home I leave you guys in the house while I take the dogs out.  You help your sister out of her coat and shoes and put them away while you wait for us to come back in.  Sure, last night I had to rescue her from behind the chair in the family room because you convinced her to climb back and she couldn't get out, but your willingness to include her in your fun melts my heart.  Every night when we process up the stairs to bed you yell Lobster, hide!  and the two of you run into your room and hide behind your bench, off on some mischievous mission before bath or story time.

Just this week, your sister's teachers were telling me about her class watching yours practice for the winter show.  I asked if she liked watching you, and they said yes, but you liked singing to her even more.  You sang, waved, smiled, and pointed to your little sister, and when your class was done you ran over, hugged her, and squeezed her hand.  I'm so so proud to hear that you take care of her and show her love and affection when Daddy and I aren't around.

When we are around you still manage to take care of yourself and include your friends.  The day before your party was your bff from school B's party.  It was at the Helicopter Museum (which you kept referring to as the Aeronautical Museum, much to everyone's enjoyment) and all your pals from school were there.  After running around and playing in all the copters, the museum man gathered you all in the room for a video and demonstration.   A lot of your friends were playing with party blowers they had taken from the food table, but you sat politely and watched the video and helped the man do a helicopter puzzle.  Of course you kept asking for a blower but I told you when it was time to eat you could have one.  Instead of throwing a fit, you continued listening to the museum man go on and on about his beloved helicopters.

When he was done you ran to the party area to get a blower.  After your pizza while everyone was milling around the cake you decided you were full and went back out to explore the helicopters some more, politely asking the museum man questions about every single control and knob you encountered.  You even pointed out to him the fuel gauge when he couldn't find it.  You made that poor man's day buddy, thinking about it now just makes me smile.

Finally came the day for your party, the day before your actual birthday.  We had planned a smaller party this year, 5 of your friends and their siblings for a total of 12 kids in attendance for your chosen theme of The Incredibles.  Mommy and Daddy worked tirelessly the week before preparing food, baking the cake, and meticulously gathering and making the pieces to a scavenger hunt we planned - an adventure in the backyard following clues and ultimately ending with the pinata bashing and the defeat of the bad guy, Syndrome.

Unfortunately, the forecast of a dusting of snow turned into 8 inches, and as your party approached one by one people cancelled.  You handled it much better than mommy did and had a blast with the two friends and your aunts, uncle, and grandparents that did show up.  Only after the party was over did you ask again where everyone else was.  I'm so sorry that you have a December birthday buddy, I really didn't plan it that way.  I promise you that every year we will make your birthday special no matter what the weather or how many Christmas celebrations are being juggled.

Always remember how much your Daddy and I love you Mr. Gobbles.  No matter what we will always be there for you.  We love you so much and are proud of you every day!

Love,
Mommy
Nothing can stop this hair!
